How Much Does a Tattoo Cost in Mount Vernon, Iowa?

One of the most common questions I get as a tattoo artist is "how much will this cost?" It's a fair question and one I'm always happy to answer honestly. The cost of a tattoo depends on several factors — size, placement, complexity, and time in the chair. Here's a straightforward breakdown of what to expect when booking with Crispy Tattoo in Mount Vernon, Iowa.

What Factors Affect Tattoo Pricing?

No two tattoos are exactly the same, which means no two prices are exactly the same either. Here are the main things that influence the final cost:

  • Size — Larger pieces take more time and more ink. A small wrist tattoo and a full sleeve are entirely different conversations.

  • Complexity — A simple bold traditional design with clean lines is going to be quicker than something with heavy detail, shading, or intricate composition. American Traditional work is built on bold, efficient design — which is part of why it holds up so well over time.

  • Placement — Certain areas of the body take longer to tattoo due to skin texture, contour, or sensitivity. Ribs, hands, and necks require more care and time than a forearm or upper arm.

  • Time — At the end of the day, tattooing is skilled labor and time is the biggest factor in pricing. The longer a piece takes, the more it costs.

What Is the Minimum Charge?

  • The minimum charge at Crispy Tattoo is $100. This covers small, simple pieces that can be completed in a short session. Even the smallest tattoo involves setup, sanitation, custom design time, and skilled execution — the minimum reflects that.

What Is the Hourly Rate?

The hourly rate at Crispy Tattoo is $150 per hour. This applies to any piece that runs longer than the minimum. Medium and large pieces, sleeves, back pieces, and multi-session work are all priced at the hourly rate.

To give you a rough idea of what that looks like in practice:

  • A medium piece (2-4 hours) typically runs $300–$600

  • A large piece or half-day session (4-6 hours) typically runs $600–$900

  • A full day session (6+ hours) is quoted individually based on the project

Every tattoo is custom drawn, so pricing is always discussed and agreed upon before any work begins. There are no surprises.

How Does the Deposit Work?

A $50 deposit is required to secure your appointment. Here's what you need to know about it:

  • The deposit goes toward the final cost of your tattoo — it is not an extra fee

  • It secures your appointment time and covers the time I spend designing your piece

  • Deposits are non-refundable if you cancel last minute or no-show

  • Once you pay your deposit and we agree on a design, you're locked in and ready to go

The deposit system protects both of us — it ensures I'm compensated for design time and guarantees your spot on the schedule.

What Is the Touch-Up Policy?

I stand behind my work. If your tattoo needs a touch-up after it heals, here's how it works:

  • Free touch-ups within the first 6 months — if something needs to be corrected or refreshed within six months of your appointment, I'll take care of it at no charge

  • $50 touch-up fee after 6 months — beyond the six month window, touch-ups are available for a flat $50 fee

Touch-ups are a normal part of the tattoo process. Healing varies from person to person depending on skin type, placement, and aftercare. Following the aftercare instructions carefully gives your tattoo the best chance of healing perfectly the first time.

Why Does Quality Matter When Choosing a Tattoo Artist?

You can find cheaper tattoos. But a tattoo is permanent, and a poorly executed piece costs more to fix or cover than it would have to get it done right the first time. American Traditional tattooing is built on bold lines, solid color, and designs engineered to age well — which means you're not just paying for a tattoo today, you're paying for something that looks great 20 years from now.

I work with clients from across Mount Vernon, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and the surrounding Corridor who want custom work done with care and intention. If that sounds like what you're looking for, I'd love to work with you.
